Notable African Americans
For this project you will research a notable African American using the advanced search features of the database Biography in Context, including the occupation filter. You will present your research by creating simulated Facebook pages for your famous persons. The template for these pages will be shared with you as Google slides. The final slide of your presentation will include citations for the database articles you used as your sources, as well as citations for the photos and/or videos in your "Fakebook" pages.
DATABASE RESEARCH - Use Biography in Context
Biography in Context
The advanced search features of this database allow you to search using a variety of different filters. Click on Advanced Search (located to the right of the search box) and then Person Search.
You will begin by choosing the occupation of a person you'd like to learn about. Start with a broader category, such as scientist or musician. For ethnicity, select African American and under Birth Year, use the drop-down menu to select is before. Then type 1950 in the box provided.
You may want to make your search broader or narrower depending on the number of results you get. Remember to copy the MLA source citation provided for each article you use.
Slide 1 - Wall
This page should include at least 5 significant events, achievements or quotes related to your person in the form of posts or status updates. You will also need a profile picture. (6 pts.)
Slide 2 - Info
This slide should include at least 10 basic facts about your person, such as date of birth, place of birth, occupation, education, interests, awards, marital status, groups or organizations the person is associated with. The categories will be different for each famous person. Delete the parts of the slide that do not apply to your person. DO NOT MAKE THINGS UP! (10 pts.)
Slide 3 - Photos & Slide 4 - Videos
You should include at least 2 photos and/or videos with captions. Each caption should include as much information as you can about who is in the photo/video (it may be a friend or family member) and where and when the photo/video was taken. (4 pts. - 2 for the photos/videos and 2 for the captions)
Slide 5 - Citations
This slide will include at least 5 citations: 1-2 for database articles, 1 for the profile picture, and 2-3+ for the other photos and/or videos you included. (10 pts.)
Another 5 pts. are for any additional elements of your choice (status updates/posts, facts, photos/videos with captions) and for creativity.
TOTAL = 35 pts.
